Rationality and Emotionality in Uncertain Times - How Will We Live in the Future?

17.-20. November 2022, Karl-Franzens-Universität
Meerscheinschlössl, Mozartgasse 3, 8010 Graz/ Austria

Society is currently facing immense challenges, permeated by certainties and uncertainties, by stability and instability, and by astonishing upheavals.

Human rights are the foundation of democracy, and security is a basic need of every individual and a necessary condition of every society. But the need for security is threatened by war, scarce resources, global competition, and other international crises. Our world is undergoing comprehensive processes of change that affect all areas of our lives. Against this background, the congress asks the following questions: How do we want to live in the future? What does a realization of sustainable education for all require? How can we sustainably strengthen trust in science and awareness of democracy? What possibilities does philosophy offer to support society in these processes of change?

This year's congress is planned as an inter/transcultural forum to enable philosophical engagement with contemporary phenomena, as well as to bridge the gap to other scientific disciplines. An important goal of this event is to initiate an exchange of different approaches and thus make explicit further knowledge bases for both educational conceptions and educational policy initiatives.

Focal points of the congress include the following topics:

  • Philosophy, human rights and democracy
  • Certainty and Uncertainty
  • Community of Inquiry
  • Sustainability
  • Digital Ethics
  • Critical Thinking
  • Connections between communication and way of life
  • Inter- and Transdisciplinarity - Multiculturalism
  • Lifelong Learning: Philosophical Perspectives and Education
  • Peace as a philosophical challenge
