Fighting Fake News

A Project to Combat Disinformation (2022-2024)

The spread of tall tales, disinformation and manipulated images has increased dramatically in recent years. The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of digital literacy with conspiracy narratives and false reports that are harmful to health.

It is therefore important to "combat disinformation", to teach methods for debunking manipulative reports and to address and sensitise as broad an audience as possible, especially those from socio-culturally disadvantaged backgrounds. The fundamental aim is also to recognise mechanisms of manipulation and to defend democracy on the Internet.

A functioning democracy is based on education, the ability to reflect, critical thinking and the capacity for judgement - i.e. the maturity of citizens, which is why the EU has been taking united action against (systematic) disinformation since 2018 with an action plan specially designed for this purpose.

KNOW FAKE wants to make an important contribution to this, because citizens' media skills are an increasingly important component of maturity. Media literacy includes: the analytical examination of forms of media communication, the reflection of different content, the teaching of practical strategies to be able to see through, better understanding and discussing mechanisms of manipulation.

KNOW FAKE is based on the European Action Plan for Democracy and the fight against disinformation and brings media skills directly to families in the form of this educational project.

Together with experts from all over Europe, we are developing an analogue card game (multilingual) and a supporting web-based app that can be used to better recognise and critically classify disinformation and fake news.

One of the aims is to establish family exchanges as a place of learning for digital literacy; in addition, the playful approach and low-threshold accessibility offer the ideal complement to school and extracurricular education in youth facilities, through which the background, functioning and principles of fake news can be learned and analysed.

Dissemination will take place via multiplier events for parents, educators and political representatives; political decision-makers will also receive an impulse paper.
